Hey guys, I am looking into getting licensed with the state of Texas. If I can confidently answer the questions on Mike's simulated exam, what are the odds that I will do fairly well on the state exam? I have finally got long awaited paperwork that qualifies me for the exam. Thanks

In my experience you will be well prepared. Sit down at a table, take the simulated test, and TIME yourself. You think you know the answer! Take the test the 1st time without looking any of them up. That way you will get done in the allotted time - but you will fail. Maybe not if you are an inspector who does know the code....but even then I don't think most would pass.
Then you will learn to look up the answer in the code book. Doing so you will learn how to find the answer, and then when you test you WILL PASS. You do need the practice looking through the code book, the actual test will probably have a lot different questions than in Mike's.....But, that is how it should be.

In Texas there is a 4 year apprenticeship for journeyman. Or, I think, 2 years to get residential wireman. And, I believe 6 years for masters. They figure 2000 hours per year.

Which license exam are you going to take? When it comes to the master exam in Texas, I recommend taking the review classes offered at San Jacinto College (Houston or Deer Park locations) if you live in the area. If you need more training, San Jacinto College offers 16 week NEC classes. I have enrolled in a class at San Jac this fall so I can renew my licenses.

Get into a prep course, do all the studing you can, use multiply authors of books.
What I'm seen lately (here) is people stuck to one author, and state that they didn't cover some subject aspect that was on the test.
Frankly I find that nearsided (can't see far) cause if its in the "code book" it could be on the test in some form or fashion.
Theres plenty of examples of house service Calc's of varoius applications in the back of the box, for a good over-view. Get some Prep Books, do the exercises, I can only stress doing the math problem repetitively, based on the question that they ask and with the understanding the Code as to when and where to apply it. Don't forget the Index is your friend.
It's just like the job, theres plenty of work to complete the task.

I bought Mike Holt's pratice exam book. I wrote the answers on paper (not in the book). I found the CA journeyman test was easier than Mike's practice tests.

cody, good luck, i am planning to take the same test here on the south
side of town, i bought the thomson journeymen review 5th edition.
the calculation part of the mike holt test was my weak spot, i scored 68 on the 2 other parts on the first attempt.
i wish now that i could have "grandpawed in," but i let the time slip by...

I studied the calculations extensively and felt relatively well prepared. But guess what?.....there was not whole lot of calculations;like that in the Mike Holt tests and documents. Mostly NEC stuff. Mike Holts Journeyman test is much harder on all sections except for the NEC part. Oh by the way, I passed thank goodness.:smile:
