Single phase backup for VFD.

Charlieb,
I built the control systems for the Submerged Traveling Screens on the Juvenile Fish Bypass System at John Day and The Dalles dams back in the '80s. I know of what you speak. Those lower galleries would be a horrible place to be in a fire. Heck, I hated them without a fire!

I would also think that a battery system local to the VFD would be a bad idea down there too. Corrosive environment, little to no maintenance, constant damp, it would be worse than a boat bilge in some of those areas.

Charlie:

I didn't notice you mentioned a 10HP motor. That's a little large than I was thinking of.

You might double check the building codes: I think they define both a "smoke and heat vent", and a "smoke control system". (Not sure about the exact names.)

Anyhow, I think one required backup power, and the other one didn't.

The kit n the tunnel under the sea did just fine. Everything was IP66 of course.
