Does the NEC allow (or prohibit) the use of a two wires (Phase + Neutral) service on a residential dwelling?

Thanks

230.79(C) only applies to SFDs. Also, there's a lot of 120v services still in use that were installed years ago.;)

I've come across a few of those old 30 amp services. On one of the 30 amp service changes I did was the home of a retiree from Alliant Energy (local POCO)! I still remember the old timer saying those 30 amp fuses never blew! (on #12 wire!) Wasn't till the neutral burned up in the riser pipe that he had the service updated.
Ernesto, welcome to the forum.

those 30 amp services are pretty common i changed out a good handful of them. only problem is the meter is always 120 volt so you need to get the power company out there asap when you change the service to swap out the meter. usually they let us rig it until they get there. by rig it i mean shove a piece of 10 solid or something like that between the line and load side in the meter socket. they dont seem to mind that all that much just as long as they know they need to change the meter so they come out pretty fast
