I want to understand what is required for sizing a feeder to an elevator controller and motor. In looking at a situation where a feeder circuit from a distribution panel feeds an elevator control panel I want to determine the size of the feeder breaker in the distribution panel as well as the size of the feeder cable from the panel to the elevator controller.
I've never physically seen an elevator controller, however I'm assuming that it is an assembly similar to a motor starter which has a contactor and some sort of overload device. With that being said can the elevator controller and motor be treated as the same device for sizing the feeder to the motor?
Since the elevator motor is an intermittnet duty motor table 430.22(E) indicates that the feeder between the panel and the elevator controller needs to be rated for at least 140% of the elevator nameplate current. I'm guessing that since there are overloads in the elevator controller itself than the feeder breaker located in the distribution panel would fall under Table 430.52 and thus the feeder breaker could be sized up to 250% of the elevator nameplate.
Am I correct regarding the feeder breaker and conductor sizing to the elevator controller/motor?
