i never new exactly how to size large junctions for large conductors
for example .. i had to extended existing #2 feeders for a relocated set of load centers
i used 12 x 12 x6 boxes which passed inspection ,, but i couldn't find the code sections that dictated this

Once you get to conductors of size 4 and larger the rules change and you use 314.28 for the sizing.

314.28 has us use the raceway sizes to size the pull box, if you are using cables you go by the cable connector size.

I don't normally used cable type wiring methods, but does the cable connector size match the conduit size that would be required for the same number and size of conductors? I would expect that the connector size would be smaller than the required raceway size.
...When transposing cable size into raceway size in 314.28(A) (1) and (A)(2), the minimum metric designator (trade size) raceway required for the number and size of conductors in the cable shall be used. ...

Good catch. You are able to use a smaller cable connector.
