Sizing wire for circuits from a subpanel

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before in this forum. I'm trying to determine the correct wire size for a 15-amp outlet 50 feet from a 40-amp subpanel located 125 feet away from the main panel. Am I supposed to size the wire using the distance from the outlet to the subpanel (50 ft) or the distance from the outlet to the main panel (175 ft)? Thanks.
