I did a rough inspection today on a new house and found the electrical contractor had run #2AL SER under the crawl space and exited the house in the rear. The cable then went into a 2" PVC conduit sleeve for about 10ft. and up through a concrete slab for a new garage. This is going to be used for a sub panel for the garage and a new pool. Just didn't look right to me.
I went to article 338, 2005 NEC...with the exception of the 680.25 problem using this apparently NEW sub panel to power up the pool, I couldn't find a a reason why this would not be allowed...any thoughts...thanks
 
SER cable is not permitted to be installed underground in a conduit. The UL whitebook shows this information as well as a new change in 338.12 for the 2008 NEC.

Also, as you already pointed out 680.25(A) does not permit SER cable to be used as a feeder for a pool panel.

The conduit under the slab is considered to be a wet location (300.5{B}). SER can not be used underground (338.12{A})

Oh...Now I understand what you're saying....To bad 338.12 is not in 2005 code....I'm going to talk to the young electrican on monday...
Want to save him from running dead on to 680.25(A) in another month or so when he does the pool...time to run the conduit ....thank you for your input

Its not just the 680 pool issue. The ser can not be ran outside underground. Its a total violation

Check out service entrance cable in the UL white book. It states that SER cable is not suitable to be run underground with or without conduit.

Even under the 2005 this is not permitted due to the listing of the cable as Raider1 has stated. The new text in the 2008 just clarifies the listing requirement that already existed in previous codes.

Regarding the pool feeder I believe that the exception would permit this if the feeder was existing so if the pool were added later because the cable assembly would be permitted to serve as the feeder. The underground SE is another issue.

The panel and pool are on the same permit...at this point neither one is existing...I wouldn't buy into the exception...thanks
by the way I printed out the ANSI/UL 854
