Webster's has the answer.

Desk - a table, counter, stand, or booth at which a person works

Countertop - the flat working surface on top of waist-level kitchen cabinets.

What appears to be a closet installed in a kitchen can be referred to as a pantry.

What is a rod doing in the kitchen closet? To hang up grocery bags after having to lug them all the way up the hill into the house. Gonna put them away later hunny...

The most important thing that I have learned in this website is...

Check With AHJ!
This closet is at the mud room entry and is for hanging your coats and other articles of clothing when coming in from the barn. We keep the mop and broom in this 24 by 36 inch cloths closet that is beside of our pantry in the kitchen. This was done by the request of the home owner which is me. I didn?t ask the planning board nor the inspector if this was permissible I only ask the framing contractor to build it.

I do not have a smoke alarm nor AFCI protection in this room that has a closet because it ain?t no bedroom although I will sleep in there if I so desire.

Who hasn't slept on the couch, in the den, after the frigid wife told you to?

So, what about the counter top in the left foreground? Is this kitchen counter, or is this something else?

For all you guys getting out the dictionary
The official NEC dictionary is Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. The edition is dependent on which edition is referenced in the style manual for that edition of the code in question. My source is an informal interpretation from NFPA

Re: Small applience circuits and desk extensions of counter

Should NEC not tell us in definitions that if the word is not defined here just what dictionary to use.

Re: Small applience circuits and desk extensions of counter

I can't even imagine where the phrase "counter top" might have came from.

Maybe people used to put their abaci on them. :D
