They're not in the NEC (NFPA70) but in NFPA72.

See chapter 11 of the 2007 edition of NFPA 72 and chapter 29 of the 2010, 2013, and 2016 editions of NFPA 72.

They are not allowed in kitchen areas. You are supposed to maintain a minimum separation of 10 feet from cooking appliances. See 29.8.3.4.(4) in 2010.

NYC has it's own building code regulating FA devices locations for most occupancies, in some cases it tells you go to NFPA for partial or full coverage.

You need to check your location, could require a heat detector.
