Most manufactures will recomend replacing your smoke alarms every 10 years.
I just went through my house about a year ago, and replaced all my old firex smoke alarms and also installed a combination smoke/CO alarm on each level. The old alarms were 12 years old.

Jeez...maybe you had a fire in your house and didn't even know it, cause the counterfeit smoke thingee did not work...better check the house.
