Could someone provide a link to one of Mike's charts showing the chronology of Smoke Detector placement in the Building Code?

Still cranking out this book.....

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

The requirements depend on when the building was built.Mikes provides this site for free but really needs to charge for the books ;)

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

I'm troubled by some people's fixation on the chronology of when certain requirements went into certain codes. What many don't realize (and it causes real trouble) is that many areas take several code cycles to adopt a code. It wouldn't be unusual for an area to be 10 years behind on adopting certain codes. More so in the past than in recent years. Many rural areas never had any codes that had the rule of law until recent years. It's troublesome when a person (home inspector, mostly) attempts to cite a supposed violation stating that it should have been a certain way when the home was constructed or remodeled. Not so, in many cases.

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

ty - It would be my pleasure to sent you a free autographed copy when it's complete! :)

Jimwalker - Well, someone was kind enough to send me a link off this site to a fantastic chart showing chronology of GFCI and it was greatly appreciated.

mdshunk - Actually, Home Inspectors aren't even supposed to so much as BREATHE the "C" word... code. We're neither code officials or interpretors. But I do always encourage putting them everywhere recommended by today's standards simply as a courtesy to home buyers at their own expense and initiative. Of course, whenever these standards come up the seller and listing agent always ask about grandfathering and it's nice to have a rough idea if it is or not.

We are in a rather unique situation.

mdshunk - PS. I've been inspecting homes for 11 years and have performed over 9000 of them. It will probably surprise you that I agree with you 100%!!!! :) We ain't the code police and I definitely don't play that the game that way... I'm kinda the the "Barney" of home inspectors.

I'm pleased to learn that. Since you are in that industry, you are also aware that many less educated home inspectors cause buyers and sellers lots of needless expense and heartache.

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

mdshunk - Yup, I agree! I inspect homes and sell products to home inspectors at trade shows and there is a REAL temptation to play God and Know everything about everything which just isn't our calling.

Our service was born out of a genuine need on the part of home buyers to know in general terms what they are buying. We're supposed to be helpful, informative professionals that stand in the gap and when necessary send folks to specialists, like you, when clearly needed.

That's what one of my books is about, The Zen of Home Inspection, realizing that Inspecting homes is at best an imperfect art and all a home buyer truly gets is hopefully thorough professional service.

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

But, again, what I need for this book, if possible, is information regarding when smoke detectors became required in halls, basements, attics, bedrooms and when hard wiring with battery back-up bacame required if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

That might be troublesome information to come by, since there were a number of different building codes before the IRC pretty much took over. I know that HUD, FHA, VA, etc all had their different little rules on those too.

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

Smoke Alarms are not an NEC requirement.

If we install smoke alarms, we have to follow NEC as far as wiring method, supporting, splicing, etc, etc...

The IRC spells out Smoke Alarms rather well. I've only been a member for a few years and have no idea of the smoke alarm requirement history.

I would have to do some research to find that out.

Re: Smoke Detector Placement Chronology

Ok, guys, that's what I needed to know!

I'm obviously barking up the wrong tree on this one. Perfect! To the IRC I go, but I'm sure I'll be back to pick your brains again.

Thanks for the insights and info!

This is a GREAT service and you are all most helpful.

Best Wishes!

Mike

Oh, and ty - If you should happen to stumble upon that info would you kindly fire it off to (deleted e-mail address per forum policy?

If you need to make a private contact use the private message function of the forum. Thanks
