The wiring of them is an NEC issue. Placement is a building code issue.

Check NFPA 72 Nat. Fire Alarm Code. It will outline locations in residential, but check with local building code, that may reference you to NFPA 72 or it may have locations identified. If you get info from local Fire Dept on the locations, make sure it is in writing with cheifs signiture.
