Smoke detectors not working together

Have you actually verified the continuity of the red wire?
Might there be excessive noise voltage on the wire interfering with the signal?

Well, it's fixed but I'd never seen this. Even though continuity existed all the way through the red wire, the detectors would not communicate with each other unless I ran a temp wire. And even then, the two units would not communicate with both the jumper and the original red wires. They only work with the jumper only. I took out all units except the first and 8 th one. I disconnected all red wires in every box, and one by one reconnected them as I added each unit. The first 8 worked fine. But when I nutted the last red run, none of the 8 units worked. A trim nail must have nicked and slightly shorted that last run of red wire, but it's blk and white were fine, Hot and neutral. Had to run a new wire to no. 9.
Thanks for your suggestions. Ready for final inspection.

I have a megohmmeter but I am embarrassed to say I don't know how to meg it. I only used it once years ago to check a damaged heated floor. (I actually did it successfully)

Best to learn ASAP. With the current AFCI & GCFI requirements only getting stronger, megging circuits at rough-in and before trim is becoming essential.

I quit supplying them after a customer said one went off at 2 am for no reason. We still have an occasional problem. But, they don't complain so much when they supply the smoke detectors.' They' meaning the home owner or the GC
