I have read about not installing smokes within 3 ft of paddle fans and return vents, how about split units. And is this found with the smoke instructions or a building code

The point is you don't want to install it near moving air sources. Because it will blow the smoke around and possibly delay activation of the alarm. In house fires every second counts

Yes, it would probably apply to split units, depending on how the air flow is directed. Please see NFPA 72-2010/2013 at section 29.8.3.4 for more information.
