I know the NEC doesn't address smoke detectors but what ever NFPA publication does, is there anything making interconnection mandatory? I've got a situation where trying to interconnect the smokes would be next to impossible.

The building code in your area probably addresses this as well. The IRC requires them to be interconnected.

I would think that in a new installation in an existing dwelling, the interconnect requirement would be optional since various existing circuits could be tapped for power. Now that I know there are wireless interconnect models out there, I'll try to sell them but I'm sure some customers won't want to spend the extra $$ for those models.

How much are they ?

I do not know for certain, but I have been told that the wireless devices cannot substitute for interconnected devices when interconnection is required.

I don't have access to either publication. Is interconnection mandatory on existing dwellings having smoke detectors installed? This is being done in an area with no AHJ so I can't get an answer that way.

NFPA 72 recognizes "low power wireless system", which is basically a wireless detector which communicates with alarm panel. They satisfy requirements in building codes. I don't think the detectors in the link will satisfy requirements. I don't have fire alarm book with me now. I'll find details and post later.

NFPA 72 6.16 gives special requirements for "low power radio (wireless) systems. Among the requirements are: alarm signals must latch until manually reset, and monitoring for integrity. I can post entire section if anyone's interested.
