Just wanted to run this by you guys and see what you think.A contractor wanted to run a phone line directly in the conduit for a sub-panel feed to a pole barn(100 amp).I told my friend not to let him do it because it would get noise.I couldn't come up with anything that said it was against code, Is it.Now the contractor says he is going to run Flexible non-metallic conduit( blue smurf tube) in the 2" pvc to run the phone line thru. He says this installation is up to code.I think this sounds like a hack job and he's to lazy to dig a 3/4 pvc for communication, but thats jst me. Look for to hearing your responses. Thanks Jason

I like sticking my petard out. Look at 725-54 (a) (1) exception No. 4 (b). Well maybe it refers to a manhole but you can wallow around in 725 all you want and you or he might find something to permit it. Also watch the conduit fill for the 2" PVC.
Is he using #1 cable for the 100 amps?
What is the diameter of the blue smurf tube?
Will there be any sound interference with the power so close to the phone line?
Since he's your friend, why don't you help him out and dig the new trench for him? [This has a tendancy to change people's opinions.]

Take a look at 800.52(A)(1) it gives the seperation requirements. Even if the smurf tube is legal, there would be a lot of induced noise. There is no burial depth of telephone cable, have someone spade a 2 pair 22 gage DB cable under the sod and call it ok.

to my understanding ANY time you run communications parallell with power over so many feet you will get induced noise..
I ran just over 100 feet of one inch pvc underground from a house to a shop, buried it, then came back later and ran fone just below the surface of the ground, but parallell with the power all the way, and the noise on the fone line is Terrible..
