Yet Another Big Storm Feb, 2 & 3

And now the weather people are talking about a really big storm coming up from the Gulf of Mexico Monday & Tuesday. What they have not yet decided is, where it will go.

No ice on the distribution or transmission lines here yet. I'll keep you posted.

Chris,
Your post makes me wonder why I ever left Florida. I am having thoughts about returning. If I do come back, any suggestions on a good location. I am not sure if Miami will do it for me anymore. Thanks John.

Florida was perfect in early 70's , nice clean beaches that you coul drive right up to, great weather. I ran from Naples before property values got low. Didn't work ,everything causing it moved further north. Before you move back you might want to visit and see job market. Luckily i am almost ready to retire and can afford to stay. Unemployment is very high here and forclosures at all time high.

First I would like to thank George (and whatever other moderators may have had a hand) in resurrecting this thread.

The ice they were describing for the storm that made me start the thread "pooped out." It was a minor ice storm with just a few hundred people being affected...not enough for most news teams around here to get out of bed and report. The south got hit much worse.

For us the winter has been one small storm after the other, with bitter cold and wind inbetween. What I have seen in the past from winters like this is a late spring heavy storm that will take the weakened sytems and lay them down.

It is funny that the most damage so far this winter season if from the salt melting the ice and the mixture of water, debris and salt flowing into the manholes and "lighting up" the underground transformers, knocking out whole blocks at a time.

For all the SE cable haters here is a thought. Im my local ice storm last month I repaired hundreds of services. There are still many to be done. What I have found is that pvc risers sustained the most damage. In most cases the clips just broke right off and the riser snapped at the meter.

The se installations were different. The metal clips with good screws held or in alot of cases the top few clips popped but the rest held. All that was needed was to resecure the cable.

Having seen the what I have seen, I say the best service riser is se cable, metal 2 hole straps and at least #10x1 1/2" screws every foot and a half or so. That's what I will be installing from now on.

I'm an SE cable guy myself, but that is good anecdotal evidence not to use PVC risers.

Id say Pensacola Florida is a great place to stay but the economy stinks. Word has it Mobile Alabama is booming residential and industrial. Puts you an hour from the great beaches of Pensacola.

If I do come back, any suggestions on a good location.

Hey John, how you feeling?

The nicest place in Florida right now is Georgia.

Side note: Kentucky got hammered this week as I'm sure you are aware. Norb's last activity here was 1/28, early morning. Hope he is just busy, but dollars to doughnuts he's been without power.

KY took a hard hit and many will be out of electric for couple weeks. We have a lot of family in Upton KY . Nephew is spending $100 a day in gas to keep trailer warm. Hope he knows that the 2 generators will be trash after running 24/7 for 2 weeks. Sister inlaw staying in motel. This is one hard time for everyone up there. Hopefully nobody will do anything stupid and cause a fire.

Just heard from Norb. 2 days without power, 4 without phone /internet. He is OK but things don't sound real pretty there.

I always use sch80 PVC, unless it's a mast, I will meet you nay-sayers half way. On Long Island when you do a residential service you leave the service drop on the old POA and install a new one, the poco is supposed to switch it when the change the drop, hahaha, hahaha, in 2 to 5 years. Anyway, I use a EYE Bolt with a 1/2 course thread, when I can hit a stud, if not then I'll use one with a machine thread and nut and bolt it through with some 4/11 blanks, I do prefer the metal straps over the plastic ones, sometimes you can get nice coated ones so they still match. I've seen my service drops holding up decent size trees. However I think some others always use the lag type and most of the time you end up with only the plywood sheathing as support, and 2" pvc with a strap every 5" isn't gonna cut it.

Maybe he be one of the lucky ones that got power back this morning. Sister inlaw called an they have it back but brother inlaw still without in Smith Grove and another in Shepharsville still without.
