IAW 2008 NEC, 400.8(6) ( uses not permitted ) SO cord is not permitted in raceways except as otherwise permitted. The SO in question is a feeder to 150HP air compressor, from a disconnect 50 feet away. Because the cord is subject to damage 4" GRC was ordered as a raceway. SO cord was used because the installation is not permanent, or sometime in the future it may be moved. Can anyone quote a NEC passage to permit this install? I can't find one, thanks in advance... Oh please ignore the fact that once the SO is in the GRC you will need bigfoot to pull it out through the 3-90's used.....

Take a look at 400.14. This permits flexible cord to be installed in aboveground raceways in industrial establishments were conditions of maintentance ensure that only qualified persons service the installation.

By the way is this hardwired at both ends?

Which section in 400.7 uses permitted, are you using?

Thanks

If I wasn't looking so hard elsewhere I might have turned the page, I feel kinda embarrassed to have asked the question now. Using 400.7(6)

Not a problem, don't feel embarrassed about asking a question.

Does the SO cord have an attachment plug and receptacle outlet as required by 400.7(B)?

If you are using flexible cord to connect equipment for frequent interchange you are required to use an attachment plug and receptacle outlet unless you are connecting to busway as permitted in 368.56.

The SO cord will be terminating to lugs after entering both enclosures via GRC. I was looking for a reason to not use SO within the GRC. It is an expensive way to wire a compressor pretty sure the THHN of proper size would have been cheeper... Not my checkbook, thanks again.

I have found since shifting to the Maintenance Electrician (Dark Side), from my previously contractor life, that the NEC is secondary to what someone with the power to want, desires. Silly little things like this can slide, but I hold the line at safety issues.
