Working with a PE on the last solar job we did, was a pleasure, he supplied detailed plans, right down to the hardware placement and sizes, and the added bonus working with the PE was he recommended us for other electrical projects.

IMO, the best answer to this "problem" is the creation of a special license to install solar power systems.

Its not really just electrical. Most of the work really is not electrical in nature. The license should cover the sum total of the knowledge required to install these things.

Bob, I have to disagree.
MOST of the work IS Electrical in Nature. There is Alot more to PV installations than throwing some modules on a roof and producing electricity.

There is Wire Sizing (both AC and DC), conduit fill, deration, supports, terminations, bonding, grounding, and many many more electrical issues to take into concideration.

Go back 5-8 or more years of being a member of these forums. There are alot of Electricians that do not grasp some of these concepts, and to think that someone with absolutely no electrical background can easily handle a PV install, is incorrect.

And so we let someone do the array and hire an electrician to do the AC side and get the inspection. MOST of these Electricians haven't done any schooling in PV design or installations and have no idea what they would be looking at IF they even ventured onto the roof and looked.

As this technology contiues to grow, I think that we will see alot of changes in the trend of how the business is conducted.
