South African Electrical Code Requirements

I have a colleague of mine that will be wiring churches and some housing in South Africa.

He has questions about the South African/British wiring codes; voltages, wiring requirements, ETC.

Does anyone know of any online or written resources or codes that would allow him to prepare before he goes over????

He is a Journeyman Electrician.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It's been a while (over 25 years) since I worked in South Africa. It had a fairly eclectic series of standards but the dominant Standards series was IEC. At the time, inspection was basically limited to heavily populated locations. The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) in Johannesburg pretty much acted as the national AHJ, UL, NFPA, IEC, etc. They were pretty open to any reasonable set of standards that applied to a given installation. ESCOM was the national electrical utility. They were also pretty reasonable, but VERY protective of their turf.

It is our understanding that they use British receptacles and such; 220 VAC. Is that correct???
At the time I lived there, the typical home was fed from two legs of a 380/220V three-phase system. Utilization in the home was 220V, single-phase from one leg and the other leg dedicated to a 220V, single-phase water heater. This permitted ESCOM to shut down part of the residential distribution (water heaters).

Plugs and receptacles were similar in concept (switchable), but still unique in form (pin-out) from British. Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland used the same. Wiring colors (colours) were also similar, but I forget the actual coding.
