Spa Next To Pool

Hello,

I have a customer who wants to install a spa right next to (6") from his inground swimming pool. My interpretation of 680 is negative. Please advise?

Unless you can find a way to bond the area around the pool and spa together, including the water, I don't see how it would be allowed, being it is that close. You would have a difference of potential between the two if not bonded.

That was one of my concerns. I am also concerned about the whole idea being rejected by the inspector based on 680.22(D). I will let you know what he says after I speak with him this morning. Thanks for the help.

The "outlet" in typical packaged spa would be behind barriers, bonding is the main issue here IMO.

I just provided the wiring for a self contained spa. There was a bonding lug on the outside of the spa that was connected to the spa motor and interior elements. The directions indicated this lug was to be used to bond any nearby pool equipment.

And what all will that entail to be able to bond to the pool ?

Seeing as how I'm picturing an inground pool with a concrete apron all the way around it.

Fortunately we are pulling a circuit from the house, about 20' away also next to the house is the pool pump motor. We intend to split bolt the #8 pool bond to our #8 Spa bond at the pool pump motor.
I was thinking about looking for rebar under the concrete apron of the pool but the inspector suggested the pool pump bond idea. :)

Thanks for the tip. I will look for an outside lug tomorrow. This is a Sundance Optima spa.

In my experience, all the tubs I have installed, the lug/bar is not on the outside of the tub but is on the outside of the control box. Most are mounted right under the box with the internal jumper to the equipment. I'm not saying there are none on the extreme outside of the tub but I have only seen them inside external to the control box. Also, on occasion, the lug/bar is in the control box at the bottom. You could certainly run a jumper from the internal lug/bar and mount a bar on the outside but I don't think that would be necessary since you could just run your bond all the way to the inside.
Since you are running a new feed, you could put the bond wire in the conduit with the feed wires.
