Is there any reason I cannot put a 40 amp breaker in the main panel and a 50 amp GFCI breaker in the spa disconnect? It is cheaper that way and the spa just requires a 40.

Using 14AWG Romex from the 40A breaker to the spa disco would be one reason.

I agree not an issue but I bet some inspector will not see it that way. I have done similar things before without an issue.

Conductor protection & motor gfci protection appears to have been met. Am I the only one here who does not like the word cheaper in the description of wiring methods? How about less expensive.:happyyes:

I didn't think it would be a problem but wanted to make sure. Now can somebody explain why a disconnect with a 50 amp GFCI breaker is half the price of just the breaker.

Volume sales? Loss leaders, to some extent.
Same reason that a car costs a small fraction of what the individual parts cost as repair items. Although I have not seen a single part be more expensive than the whole car except in the case of used cars.
Members have often recommended buying a panel with main breaker instead of buying just the main breaker when they need to convert an existing MLO panel to MCB or need a different sized MCB.
