Can you safely see the brush rigging under load? Bouncing brushes due to ring misalignment are often visible to the naked eye.

Especially if you can manage a strobe light source with controlable phase.

I have also used a fluorescent-light as a stroboscope... once on a brushgear problem, many times on motor problems involving slip, when the facility didn't have a stroboscope. But, it won't work well if the environment is well lighted)!
