By the way, a 15a receptacle is able to carry 20a; the difference is the slot shape.

For a given grade of receptacle, the internal parts are the same metal and gauge.

Yes that is true but this is very common installation practice especially with electric ranges/ovens. Often they require a 40 amp branch circuit but are used with a 50 amp cord, plug, and receptacle.

Kind of silly because:

-Except for the T slot, commercial grade and above 15 and 20A receptacles are the same but 20A costs more.
-99% of the time nobody is going to have anything with a 20A plug on it.

Over the years I have seen machines purchased that drew 12 to 16 amos @120 volts but have 15 amp male plugs in them. Mentioned it to the company tech or rep and they usually said it's was okay because nobody complained about it. Have taken apart at least three different brands of 120 volt 15 & 20 amp duplex receptacles and the metal parts were the same guage. Think it's a waste of money to install 20 amp duplex receptacles in any house. Better to spend money on at least special grade devices.

Any equipment that required a 20A plug would require a dedicated circuit IMHO. 30 + years ago when my shop was built & used 20A receptacles because I had them, not once has a 20A plug been inserted.
