Washington state is the king of speciality electrical licenses. In addition to Journeyman ( 4 years experience) we have 14 other speciality licenses, such as limited energy, residential, signs, etc., most are two years, some are less.
What do some other states have for speciality licenses?

Minnesota has Journeyman Electrician, Master Electrician, Elevator Constructor, Master Elevator Constructor, Maintenance Electrician, Lineman, Class A Installer, Class B Installer, Power Limited Technician. I don't know what all these are for, just got the list from the web site. These are the personal licenses. There are also a few types of contractors licenses for the business.

Holy mackerel!

Here in VA, we have Journeyman Electrician and Master Electrician for the individual, and Electrical Contractor for the business, which is divided into A, B, and C Classes; we're Class B.

(It's a $ thing.)

I'm the Master, and we're also Home Improvement and Commercial Improvement contractors. Only a company can be a contractor, which is where the business license comes into play.

MA is pretty simple:

Masters license needed to employ journeyman/ journeymen. Essentially to be a contractor. Master license holder required to also have j-man license to perform work himself.

Journeyman license allows you to perform all installations. Also allows you to be self employed and pull permits and hire one apprentice. Can only do business in the name on the license. i.e. John Smith, electrician; not John Smith Electric.

Systems Contractor license for contracting burglar/ fire alarm systems. Note this is not for all low voltage work.

Systems Installer for installing burglar/ fire alarm system.
