speed sensors

At work we have a speed sensor that sends a signal to the plc to indicate rpms of our mixer auger well that stopped working today and my boss thinks you can take a speed sensor from a tractor trailer truck ( due to the fact that they look similar) and use that in place of the rotary sensor i have my doubts has anyone got any info on this. thanks
 
And if no one would be hurt, it might be worth a try in the short term till the proper one could be obtained.

The issue against using this in the long term is if someone was hurt it could be argued that an improper product lead to the injury.

Not very likely......:rolleyes: there are just too many ways to accomplish this.
