I thought you "spiked" a cable to verify it is de-energized before working on it.
The video Ron referred to is good to see what a spike test is on a cable. When done in the field it is done to verify that a cable has be de-energized prior to cutting the cable. In the utility we speared (spiked) a cable using an hydraulic spear with the manual pump located away from the manhole (just in case we got the wrong one). The spear penetrates the jacket and shorts the conductors.When should cables be "spiked" and how should it be done?
