SPLICE BOX

I have an issue where the homebuilder took it upon himself to run all of the conduit for an outside job. There is one long run of conduit needed but was done at different times. The first part was done before a concrete retainer wall was built. The second part was to meet with the first part but the retainer wall (concrete) was now in place. The GC had his guys run the conduit under the retainer wall and stubbed out into the hole where the first conduit is now placed. The problem is that the conduits at are at two different levels and because of size retrictions of the hole, the two can not be tied together in a junction box. All wire used is THHN/THWN. Since the wire is rated to be outside anyhow, can a splice box just be placed over this mess? Thanks for any help.

Re: SPLICE BOX

How far apart are the two conduits? PVC I assume. How big is the hole and what is the size of the conduits? I figure by a "splice box" you mean one of those boxes about 1' X 2' and 14" deep. The box would have to be deep enough to reach the level of the conduits. Perhaps a manhole.

The best approach would be to insist on having the G.C. re-do the vicinity. Dig it out and drill a hole through the retaining wall at the proper depth. Or dig up some of the other conduit and slope it down to meet the first conduit.

If he wanted to save some money by doing it himself, then he should do it right.

Re: SPLICE BOX

Use a open bottom handhole. the rules for this application have been added to the 2005 NEC, look in Article 314.

Re: SPLICE BOX

We'll I agree with you to an extent. I should have been more clear however. The GC that made this boo boo, has no intention of fixing the problem he created and also has no intention of paying me anymore than the amount first discussed. Even though he ran the conduit and I am left to figure this mess out, given my situation I do not see a problem with doing what I initially asked of the forum. If the method I described in my explaination is acceptable, I see no problem with doing this therefore not making it my problem. If it is code, there is no problem, ec# or not. Thank you all.

Re: SPLICE BOX

Try a hand hole see if it flies. As far as your ec # if you are on the permit anything that is to be inspected is under that # even if the gc installed it ;)
