I put this under safety, but it may not belong here since no one will be in the water!

I just got a call from the boss, he wants to cut the plug off of a 120v sump pump, splice it, and pump out a 20 foot deep tank of water. He is thinking heat shrink will keep the water out. It will only be used one time. What do you think?

You need to check the pump specs, most standard sump pumps won't have much flow with 20' of lift. Also what is used to control the pump? A lot of the use a differential pressure switch with a sensing tube in the cord that must be out of the water.

If you use heat shrink make sure you get the kind with the hot melt adhesive lining. Regular heat shrink won't seal tight enough to keep water out at any depth where the adhesive lined stuff is almost as good as the original insulation.
