Frequently we're asked to relocate a panel. So what we do like many of you, if not all, is we put a box over the old panel bring new conductors per circuit to that box and splice in the new conductors.

What kind of splicing technology should I be looking for here. Simple wire nuts? Mechanical type? what?

What are the options.

Also, at what gauge of wire does a hi press splice become a viable option?

Why place a junction box on top of the existing panel? If the ckts couldn't be re-worked I would just remove the panel guts and use the panel back box as the junction box. Then just get a cover made up from a sheet metal shop.

As far as the terms I would leave the grounds on the ground bar if possible then use wire nuts for the hots and neutrals.

Often times, the wall on which the existing panel sits is to be removed.

In any event, am more interested in splicing technique.

I have always used wire nuts up to #8. A big blue is good for two #6's but not my choice. I like NSI Polaris. Also you won't find a wire nut listed for anything larger than a #6 so a #4 or larger is where you start looking at crimps or taps.
