split bus panel

I'm helping a friend put in a spa and was wondering if it is acceptable to put a double-pole breaker for the spa on the bottom part of a split bus panel. The bottom part has about 5 or 6 branch circuits protected by a 60 amp main. My experience is mainly commercial and some residential, no spa installs. I know to install a disconnect within 5'of the spa and so forth. My only concern is this crazy split bus panel. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: split bus panel

What is the existing load on the bottom portion??

Also, the disconnect does Not go within 5'.

If it is not your forte, and as my state will not issue a homeowner permit on a spa or swimming pool, I would suggest getting someone that is more knowledgeable to assist, or advise you.

Maybe your inspector will do a survey for a small fee.

Jim,
Not to change the direction of the thread, but my county in NY does not allow a homeowner to have a permit until they take a difficult exam, designed for only an electrician to pass.

Re: split bus panel

Maybe I'm misunderstanding. How is my question related to the proper installtion of a breaker inside a panel related to calling out an inspector? In my area an inspector will not come out for a situation like this. I was just wondering if some of you out there has put a double pole breaker in the bottom of a split bus panel. Also in regards to disconnect within 5' my understanding is this: Per 680.12 and 680.42, a maintenance disconnecting means shall be installed within sight of spa and hot tub equipment. It shall be located not less than 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls of the spa or hot tub....

Re: split bus panel

darrylb,

I don't think there's anything sacred about keeping 2-poles away from the lighting subsection in a split-bus. To me, its all about the load. A typical subsection will be fed from a 60 amp service disconnect. That's 14.4 KW. What else is in the subsection? And how does it calculate using Article 220?

Re: split bus panel

i don't mean to be a jerk but,
i think the people that made comments in regard to a qualified person doing this had a reason for saying that. anything electrical can be dangerous if done improperly. a spa can become very dangerous if installed improperly(obvious).

i also do only comercial for a living and have asked questions about residential work here. but i never asked advice for something that could go really wrong. the installation should be assesed and done by someone that does this stuff.
