440 single or split

With regard to a split system A/C system (heat pump outside and air handling unit inside), would it be a fair assumption to say the heat pump complies to Article 440 while the air handling unit complies to Article 430?

Thanks in advance.

Alwired,

Compliance to 440 per manufacturer instructions on a split system is the norm on a residential configuration. The internal unit has it's own disconnect breakers for the heatstrips/exchanger/handler section within the unit and a separate disconnect must be supplied for the outside compressor. Last install I did was 2001. rbj

Majority of the mini splits I have wired in the last couple of years have a 3 wire with ground feed between the outdoor compressor and the indoor fan coil.
Three pole single throw switches are certainly pricey. An idea struck me one day while about to purchase another one of those. I put two pole switch for the circuit feeding the outdoor compressor on the interior side under the fan coil, and then fed it to an exterior disco switch at the compressor. Now I can kill all the power to the fan coil by shutting off the whole system while standing inside in front of the fan coil unit. There is an uninterupted 3 wire (with ground) cable between the compressor and the fan coil. Anybody see any problems with this?
