Did a service call today, and found this gem in the basement:

Now that I look at it again thats wood isn't it. Voilation of C also.

Faceplates of insulating material shall be noncombustible and not less than 2.54 mm (0.010 in.) in thickness

If the wire is #12 and the box is 18 cu" then:

NEC 2008 314.16 Number of Conductors in an Outlet, Device, and Junction Boxes, and Conduit Bodies.

Also: T314.16(B) Volume Allowance per Conductor

Looks like there is just 2 cables and the NM feeding the bottom box routes around the first.

Edit to add:
Oh, yeah...hard to tell the "big picture" from the close-up pic, but I am not in favor of the NM stapled to the front edge of stud.
