Any electrical contractors out there?
I was wondering how the rest of the country is handling the Arc fault recall/replacement.
Any help or info would be appreciated.

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

All the inspectors where informed by mail from sq d about the problem a moth or two ago.

They have a group of contractors in each region and intend to use there team contractors to correct the problem. They are in the process of compiling a list of installed breakers that fall under the recall list, and have asked installing contractors to forward that information to sq d. We will see how this works???

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

What part of the country is this being done,we have bad breakers in place for almost a year.

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Here too we did almost 2,750 homes last year and at least 1,750 were SQ D homeline and QO speced panels there are alot of blue PTT buttons out there. As far as we are concerned the builders speced SQ D so let them deal with it.There has been talk that they will pay us to inspect homes trimmed out during the affected time period but as of today nothing has been said to us !!!The breakers trip on over current fault and direct shorts but they have a problem tripping within speced guidelines for AFCI breakers. The inspectors here have kept their noses out of it I guess since it is a voluntary recall by SQ D.Let it become mandatory and I bet things will change as far as that is concerned :D ;)

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Here in Colorado Springs our inspectors would give us a partial final without the arc faults or you could use a classified arc fault breaker from Cutler Hammer and get passed for the final. As of now the supply houses here carry the "new" arc faults, they have green buttons. I received a packet from Square D for the breakers I purchased at GrayBar and info as to what to do. I faxed all the info back to Square D and am just waiting to hear back. Here is the number at Square D to call 1-877-202-9046 to find more info out.

The area I refer to is New England "North East" US

In the Massachusetts area the installing contractor is already in line and awaiting final numbers from sq D

or so I am Informed!

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Does anyone know if Sq-D has more than one manufacturing plant for their Arc Faults? I'm just wondering if some have problems and some don't. Or is it just a simple design issue? In 20 or so homes since the code change (obviously a small sample size in comparison to some of you) I haven't had any call backs for nuisance trips in these breakers. The only problems we had with them was when an outlaw carpenter went around shooting strapping up with a framing gun. Then again I guess that wasn't really a problem with the breaker now was it?

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Sq d's letter stated that the installed chip (electronics) was defective. I'm sure that the run of processors are from one plant but I'm not certain.

They also the break would function normally as a other than AFCI protector. Both homeline and QO.

From what I understand, the defective part is a microchip that was made in a Belgium manufacturing plant. When Square D purchased these defective microchips, they mixed them with ones they already had and ones from other manufacturers. The result was several thousands of microchips, some defective , some not, and with no way tell any of them apart. So, you may have purchased a SQD AFCI in the time frame of the recall that is perfectly operational. But since there is no way to tell which plant the microchip inside came from, they have to recall them all.

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Just checked my product safety notice square d sent to me. The breakers affected are from March 1, 2004 to September 23, 2004. The date codes are CN, DN, EN, FN, GN, HN, or JN. These are found on the white label just above the load terminal on the breaker.

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Blue PTT button part of the recall.Green PTT button new ones.My eye sight is getting worse but I cam still see color :D These are from March through Sept. 2004.We recieved a letter from SQ D as far as recall but waiting to hear from them as to how they are going to rectify the matter. Our builders that speced SQ D have acknowledged the problem but as of today have not addressed the final remedy.

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Not all blue buttons are subject to the recall only those made between March 1 2004 and September 23 2004 are affected.

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

Scott i did put that in my post :D I`m just glad our inspectors here have not got into this issue and have passed allot of homes that have these installed. As of this date we now install only green button afci`s.Glad to see the manufacturer has been on the ball and has furnished unaffected breakers to install. We still have around 5,000 installed breakers out there and this issue has yet to be addressed.I am waiting to see how this turns out

Re: Square D Arc fault recall

When you mix a bad part with a good part who know`s which is witch,At least SQ D has stepped up to the plate and has admitted the problem. The next step is getting the affected breakers out of homes :D After all MR. happy h/o`r doesn`t care about recalls ;) All they know is that they have a recall in their home and now shnieder has acknowledged it
