most light switch devices are 1-pole, this maybe the reason why they don't allow the lighting to be connected on two HOT wires. :roll:

We use single pole control of phase to phase loads all the time. Many line voltage thermostats are single pole as are many well pump pressure switches. It is only the service isolation switch that is required to open all ungrounded conductors.
 
I don't think I've ever seen a 480V 2pole switch. 277V 2pole is probably okay on grounded Wye. I've never used one of those either. I've always used a lighting contactor with 120V control.

Interesting note: Years back, the S/S on the front of motor starters used to be 480V control using two phases tapped of the top of the starter. I never put one in, but I worked on them in the 60s and 70s. I'd guess the stuff was put in during the 50s.
