Starter motor in a car

Compared to say hydraulics, electric motors are high speed low force devices. It makes good sense to design your systems to operate the motor at high speed to get the most performance out of it.

And most typical thing for many many years has been small gear on starter motor large gear on the engine being started.

In a DC permanent motor. reversing the leads only reverses the armature current not the field so it changes direction . permanent magnet field has no current to reverse. assembling it with the field magnets upside down .though reverses the n-s orientation . but not the armature current so it runs BACKWARD !
