I am doing some app development for electrician tools. I’m trying to understand the market. I see the BLS shows 655,840 employed as of May 2018. Does anyone have a resource to understand age range? I’m trying to estimate how many would have a smartphone that would give them an opportunity to download apps I develope.

ok. electricians are people. extrapolate.
what percentage of people in general have a smartphone? 77% according to pew.

655,840 x .77 = 504996.8 roughly half a million.
if it's a brilliant app, maybe 50k downloads.
with an in app purchase of $7.99 for a spiffy upgrade to pro, you gross $399,500.

apple takes 40%. you make $239,700.

Then Google takes a cut. Then PayPal takes a slice. Then the gubbamint wants their share.............

Right. Which is why I was interested in age. One assumes many electricians near retirement may not use a smartphone. Where it is pretty safe to assume, not that older than this they wouldn’t, 40yr olds and younger almost definitely carry and use a smartphone.

I am developing ios apps only at this time. I’d look up percentage of market share for apple phones compared to other phone options. Yes, Apple’s 40%.

Then from that number make some assumptions about how many downloads @ a price is my thought.

Past retirement. Use one. Have apps, some I even use occasionally. Most likely won’t buy more.

The Average Age of Licensed Electricians is 55
With many in the industry approaching 60 years old, a fresh new workforce will be needed in the near future. Electricians are in demand in many areas of the country. Qualified and quality electricians will always be in demand.

I was born in the 50's, i own a smartphone , which is often more 'smart' than 'phone'

I'm far from a luddite , but will say i witness far too many using apps as a crutch , like cashiers that can't make change these days

rather condusive to the 'dumbing down' of humanity

jmho....

I'm 62. I have and use a smartphone. I don't have a tremendous number of apps.

My wife is 63 and has a master's degree. Does not have a smartphone. She can't figure out how to work mine. She likes to say she has a dumb phone.

I'm 66 and until last November I just had a flip phone. The only reason I upgraded was that I was completely isolated from the internet and TV for a two weeks last year after the hurricane. I needed a means of getting information, so I got an entry level smart phone.

A more important question might be.... What will your app do that others do not?

You want my honest opinon?

This morning i'm off to yet another pre bid walkthrough.

The sound of two thumbs on some s-phone app will be prominent ,captivating them all to a canned narrative.

I'll be keeping my eyes/ears open ,along with that cultivated inner voice most tenured contractors survive on.

Two distinct doctrines , many players, one bid winner. Place your bets....~RJ~

Well I guess I have a smart phone, they tell me I can store things in the clouds but with all the flooding I'm thinking the clouds must already be full.

It hard to tell if you have old timers disease or you just reach and age where you stop caring.

I finally released my first FREE iOS (iphone) app for voltage drop. Several more apps in the works.

VDrop by Nebulous LLC https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vdrop/id1461666751?mt=8

I’ll let you be the judge...but I hope you’ll find this app shines where other voltage drop apps (both paid and free) don’t or aren’t as flexible. My app provides the results in a format that allows you to perform due diligence and confirm outcomes.

I often wondered about the ratio of craftsmen on a job??

I often wondered about the ratio of craftsmen on a job??

I don't have input to your question, but ... that number you posted means that about 0.2% of the population and 0.51% of full time employees are employed as electricians. An elite group I would say. :)

It appears there are more physicians that electricians. https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physicians-and-surgeons.htm

I often wondered about the ratio of craftsmen on a job?
As in the average number of Electricains vs.. plumbers...mudders...tinbenders.... framers..... concrete finishers..roofers... etc employed in a large city???
