Got some confusion over a spec - What (by code) are the requirements for recessed cans in a steam room and sauna? What code? If not what is recommended?

I always used a typ 6inch can with glass shower trim definitely gfci protected it passed but now you got me thinking about can rating

05 Book doesn't list saunas specificaly under damp locations but I would think you would be OK if you have a fixture that is listed for such. I'm not sure that it would have to be vapor proof although it might not be a bad idea.

I have people (who are known to be wrong) saying 'vapor-proof' - with no code to back it up. And the fixture spec'ed for the job due to it being "Steam Room Rated" only has a wet listing by way of the manufacturer.

now you have me worried on past installations I researched and most manufacturers talk about fiber optic lighting

I don't believe there is a code for this unless it is local building code or design spec. Saunas are very damp places and most have no ventilation fan. Water in the air condenses out and goes down the drain or out the door. They are built out of Redwood or Cypress and are sealed up pretty tight. That is my reasoning why I believe vapor proof might not be a bad idea.

The room has no 'pressure' to speak of - and while vapor proof is not a bad idea - I see no reason to require it. In the past a simple gasketed shower trim has surficed - and I see no "Steam Room" fixture in the white book. Nor is there any code that I can see????

Don't forget it is not "Steam" it is water mist that is hot, if it was steam it would kill who ever was in the room. I just hooked up a "Mr.Steam" unit in a shower and I used a 4" IC air tight can with a gasketed trim.

I have also used recessed fixtures with a shower trim although many units come with a cheap wall mounted jelly jar. I am doing one right now that has some led rope lights in it.
