Question. Our employer (government /county) want us to wear Steel Toe Shoes. We work in the Maintenance Department (plumber, a/c tech, electrician, carperter, painter, and maintenance tech. They want us to buy these shoes. Should they pay for this item? Does it fall under the PPE issues?
Thanks

No, they don't have to pay for the shoes:

"The limited exceptions to the general payment rule recognized that
there are certain types of PPE that fall outside the scope of the
general statutory requirement for employers to pay for the means of
compliance with OSHA standards. While safety-toe protective shoes and
boots, prescription safety eyewear, and logging boots are necessary to
protect employees, the Agency considered other factors in deciding to
exempt this equipment from the employer payment requirement
, including
that the equipment is very personal, is often used outside the
workplace, and that it is taken by employees from jobsite to jobsite
and employer to employer. The Agency stated that there is "little
statutory justification" for requiring employers to pay for this type
of PPE (Id. at 15407).

Many employers do choose, on their own, to subsidize the purchase of safety shoes and prescription eyewear. Seems like the decent thing to do, to me, but an employee can easily claim that expense on his taxes too.

A few of the bigger names in shoe wear have finally started making wider
steel toe shoes. Redwing comes to mind.

I have been buying from these folks for years. My only problem is they quit selling the high top boots I used to use for pole climbing.

I have been wearing red wing for years..If you want them to last make sure you clean and oil them regularly and you we be pleasantly surprised with the quality..I have tried other brands and they did not fit my feet as well and the seams were the weak spots and that is with proper maintenance.
