Step Up/Step Down

We have found an existing condition with a step up 240/480 transformer to a step down 240/480 transformer. However, the wiring is black, white and green. Is there any way to bring this up to code, including changing voltages (ie. 240/GND), phasing, etc.

We are hoping to come up with a solution that will not mean removing miles of conductor.

Our intepretation of the NEC does not allow two hots and a ground to be White, Black and Green.

It sounds like you are describing a situation where you have a 240V supply and a 240V load, and have transformers and 480V in between to reduce voltage drop.

If this is the case, than on the 480V side you might not have 'two hots and a ground'. It is quite likely that one of the 480V conductors is a grounded conductor, in which case it _should_ be white.

I think what he means is that on that run the voltage is 240/480 so they are using the white conductor as a hot for the whole run.

The situation he is describing is in violation of the NEC correct. Would this still be in violation if it was installed before 2004?

The situation he has may not be in violation at all, more information regarding the system grounding would be required.
