Stepper Motor Step Loss Issue

Hello everyone,

I'm using a regular CNC engraving machine, and the stepper motor moves normally under no-load and returns to zero.

However, it starts losing steps as soon as it begins cutting the workpiece, and the dimensions become increasingly off-track. I've checked the power supply, wiring, and drive current, but I still can't find the cause.

Has anyone encountered the same problem? I hope you can help me.

I would go to millwrighttalk.com and see if they can help. If someone can help here just do not explain a how-to fix it just what the possible problems may be.

There are a number of things that can cause step slipping. The foremost one is insufficient torque for the work requirement. That in itself can have several causes. But it could be noise getting into the controller, the accel rate being too aggressive, magnetic resonance etc. but if it was working fine and no longer is, that tends to point to something in the controller not letting the motor develop rated torque, like a failing driver component, bad connection somewhere, something like that.
