Who buys lamps from Grainger anyhow?

We use them for fan/heater parts or if a customer needs an electrical motor right now, whatever the cost may be. Everyday electrical stuff=parts house.

I've had Grainger pull my butt out of a sling a couple of times. When you need it, you need it. Pricey? Some things, but when it's there and nowhere else, you as well as I will pay the price. Or should I say the customer, that is:D

They are outragous from there, but you are paying for them to have things in stock. Most supply houses are lucky to even have a couple hundred foot of 1/2" EMT in stock. Their standard answer is we can have it tomorrow when you need it today, Thats OK if your doing new construction, but really sucks doing service.

grainger's customer base is mostly MRO, Building Engineers, etc who dont really care what something costs -just that they can make a phone call and have it arrive the next day and the bill goes to some accounting office.

They know their market, "It's the gotta have it today at any cost customer" If you have 50 workers standing idle in a plant costing you say, $16 dollars an hour, "We can have it for you tommorow" will not cut it. I have found that they are cheaper on controls, such as pushbuttons and the like, than most supply houses because the supply houses are not in that market. They sell pipe, wire and lightbulbs.

I agree with both of these posts.

Grainger is not aimed at supplying an electrical contrator doing bid work. There are aimed at a specific type of customer that will pay a premium for the speed and diverse inventory.

We use Grianger when we have to but would not try to supply bid work from Grianger or McMaster-Carr

I was very surprised to see how low the prices were when I purchased for a customer using their account and paying cash.
I have that number tucked away for my trips to Grainger.
The prices I paid were 1/3 of the book prices.
That put them at our wholesale prices.

I learned Grainger was EXPENSIVE quite a few years ago, but lately I have also found out just how expensive my local wholesalers are on some special order items. A little searching for a 200 amp 3 pole 600v fuse block resulted in a savings to me of almost $300, plus I will have it Monday instead of two weeks from Monday.

and even more amazingly, i agree with bob..... :D

grainger, and to a *much* greater extent, mcmaster-carr, supply plant
operators with what they need to do what they need to do, today.

if it is in the catalog, mcmaster-carr has it on the shelf, available for will
call in a half hour. i needed some tamper proof bits that NOBODY had even
heard of before, to get into some equipment. like a square head screw, but
with three sides to it. metric, as well. it isn't in any of your tamper resistant
sets, trust me.

i called up mcmaster, and described what i needed, and the guy immediately
says... "those come in four sizes, do you know what one you need?" i said,
give me all 4 of them.... he asks how many i need of each......:D $2.50 each.

most of their stuff goes out next day fedex, but they also have willcall, and
it's like going to hardware mecca.... the mcmaster building in socal is 30' high,
and two million square feet, all of it shelved.

is there stuff overpriced? no, not to be able to support that level of
infrastructure and inventory.... and some of the stainless steel food grade
stuff, like strut straps and whatnot, is priced better than a wholesale house,
because of the volume they do.

"let's see, you need three 55 gallon food grade barrels, in stainless steel....?
would you prefer those in 304 or 316 stainless steel sir? and pick them up
in half an hour? they will be ready, of course.... thank you for your business."

I did work for a few CEO's for that company in Illinois. Knowing what their prices were I allways thought that Grainger was for building engineers of big companies. Where their was little oversight for getting the best deal and limited accounts set up to buy from. I asked one person if that was their targeted market a few years ago (when the econimy was a bit stronger). He said at one time it was but times have changed. And that larger companies want to shop prices, volume discounts, etc. So I asked who the ideal market for them was. He said contractors, service companies, small factories. The people that don't get much of a voulme discount anywhere. Someone that needs something special right away.

Also I know of stories that show how the company is a typical bloated corp. Things like family members on colege break taking home a grand a week to answer the phone. Or business trips on private jets to caribian places for meetings.

Yep,
We buy a lot from grainger!
First time I looked in the catalog I was like "what!" was told quickly
by purchasing "pay no attention to the prices" we have an account with them, just give us the part number you want and we will take it from there.
