Has anyone spotted or purchased a new combination AFCI yet?

Or are the manufacturers really holding out on us and they are going to introduce them as the ball is dropping in NYC?

One of the local supply houses suposedly has an order in to Square D for combination AFCI breakers, but they don't have them yet.

I talked with the owner of a local supply house who sells CH and they are not available to him yet. He has no idea when they will ship any.

I find the whole situation a mess with plenty of blame to go around. From the NFPA to the manufacturers and onto the the trade publications which appear to be just a tool of the manufacturers anyway.

Maybe we should offer a reward for the first consumer that is able to purchase one of these new AFCIs over the counter.

Of course this also must be a real problem to the overseas counterfeiters. They had to hold up the shipments of counterfeit combo AFCIs until the real ones hit the streets. :D

Many AFCI's have GFCI style circuits in them already - but are not rated as such.

That said - where do I collect my reward? CH had a 'rated' GFCI/AFCI a while back (few years ago) in the previous long model breaker before it was revampped to fit in all breaker spaces without being mashed against the neutral bus. They seem to have disappeared????? They were huge, they fit in a 1" BR space, but the breaker had an extra appendage that was difficult to deal with. I think they have stopped making them in the long version, and haven't seen them since. Can't seem to get to eaton's site today, but I think it was a BR120AFGF?

A combination type AFCI breaker is not a GFCI/AFCI breaker.

A combination type of AFCI breaker combines the features of a branch/feeder type and an outlet type of AFCI.

Here is a link to Siemens and a document on combination type AFCI breakers.

The new combination type AFCI's are suppost to detect a series arc where the old branch/feeder type will only detect a parallel arc.

the other night a couple of us saw a cigar shaped object in the sky, but noone really brought it up until my neighbor mentioned that he had been abducted. His memory is pretty hazy, but he's fairly certain that he saw one of these items connected to the ship's power gear.

hope this helps.

I was at the supply house the other day, and the gal behind the counter said that Square D combos were available, and she was ordering a single box of them. I don't know about other jurisdictions, but City of Fort Collins is planning on using the permit date to draw their line in the sand for enforcement.

Permits pulled 01/02/08 and beyond will require Combo AFCIs on inspection.

I haven't asked or heard anything from other suppliers, aside from that exchange a couple weeks ago where the CH guy gave me a deer-in-the-headlights look when I inquired about them.

But that still won't get you the reward (if there really was one ;))

Someone needs to be able to purchase one, actually hold it in their hand and walk out the door of the supply house with it. :)

Maybe so but if someone did actally take a photo of it holding in their hand then i will belive it.

i know i did asked them as well they gave me " Deer in headlight " look as well.

Merci, Marc

I will not believe they are available for sale and installation until someone has purchased one and left the supply house with it.

Seeing one in a display, or a salesman showing one but keeping it will not count. :)

How about if I stand at the counter, holding one I could walk out the door with, if I signed for it? I don't have any use for one, so buying it would be a little silly - but I want the reward. :D

So far, it sounds like only SqD has them even close to being ready for sale.

Now the big question is, will it do what they say it will do?
