Stranded vs. Solid

Re: Stranded vs. Solid

Then I guess, I won't be doing any of those jobs because my bid going in would take exception to the solid spec and state that my bid price is based on using stranded #10. That way there is no give back or credit involved because my base price is based on using stranded wire. If I have the low bid, I doubt that the designer would say anything about the replacement of solid with stranded. By the way, I assume that we are talking about conduit jobs and not cable type jobs. All of my posts are based on the increased time required to install #10 solid in conduit.

Re: Stranded vs. Solid

Unfortunately most estimators wouldn't catch this in the specs to make an issue of it at bid time. Believe me they miss things that cost a considerable amount more money. (Like bidding galvanized cable tray when stainless is in the specs!) On the job I am doing now there was a value engineering process to lower the price due to budget problems. That would have been the time to catch it but it didn't happen. Now us in the field are left to deal with it.

Re: Stranded vs. Solid

Well that would work fine if our salesmen thought about it.

Right now they do as you say for, excavation, concrete cutting and patching, temp power, storage of customer supplied items etc.

And yes I was talking about raceway installation.

Sometimes the engineers are pretty adamant about the specs.

We have had to run 750kcmil from audio racks back to the MBJ after trying desperately to get that changed.

This meant bringing a 750 from floor 5 to the basement.
