For EMT it's 3' from a box or pull point and every 10' after that. Are people telling you every 5'?

1/2" emt starts to get the "droops" placing straps on 10ft centers on a hortizontal run, so I shorten it up some....actually I hardly ever run 1/2....min size for the mule 3/4...well most of the time....:)

I don't know about NYC but NEC says every 10 ft. I usually like to throw one up within a couple feet of every coupling. An extra one here and there if that pipe starts sassing me.

Edit to add: I believe code also says one within 3 ft of a pull point.

Strapping every 5' is what I like to call "Urban Legend" code. It's the code that has never existed, but which has nevertheless been passed down from generation to generation by "electricians" who have never cracked open a code book.

It likely comes from people thinking that the code minimum is every 10' and a better job would have them spaced closer together. If you have ever worked in a subway the transit code may be every 24" or 30".
