So, getting back to the original question, what would we call the device?

CID - Current Imbalance Device
CICI - Current Imbalance Circuit Interrupter
IDD - Imbalance Detection Device
ICTD - Imbalance Circuit Trip Device
IUD - Imbalance Usage Device

Ok, i'm reaching here. Better stop.

I vote for IUD...

"I'm sorry ma'am... your IUD has failed. We're going to have to replace it..."

As far as 2 pole devices are concerned, two types are made. Those that only detect imbalance on the Ungrounded and those that detect imbalance on the Grounded as well. The first type can only be used on 240 V loads. The second type can be used for multi-wire brance circuits.

Which makes me think of another question... if a GFCI is required for 120v circuits in an unfinished laundry area, why not require it for 240v loads as well (dryer)? What is the rationale? :-?

Basically because no one has put in a code proposal for that with enough 'substantiation' to convince the code making panel it is needed.

In other words a lot more people are injured or killed by 120 volt equipment then 240 volt equipment.

GFI in garage

GFI in garage

a friend asked if it is necessary to install all GFI's in a garage even if there is no water source.( this is residential)
