Next week i am going to install a sub panel to feed a barn that is being feed from the owners house. i have talked over with the owner that useing a house calculations with the load already calculated in his house there will be limitations to what can be run off the panel. He asures me he just needs general lighting and receps. The barn itself and the house is a part of an old dairy farm and located 300 ft from the house and i know that they inteend to get livestock. My question since this property is going to be labeled as farm land for tax purposes i am sure. Is there a minumum panel size i must install like 100 for a dwelling or can i just size a sub panel for load needed. there is no real ahj for me to contact since this is in rural Wv and no inspection. thank you whitt

Re: sub panel for a barn

The NEC only requires the service disconnecting means to be rated at least 100A for a single-family dwelling. All other panelboards and feeders need only to be sized for the load to be served.

Edit: You may wish to review Article 547 considering you do feel the location will be used for animals.
