Sub panel location

I am doing a large residential remodel that is now going to need a 100a sub panel at the other end of the house to save me time & material. The builder does not want to see the panel so I was wondering if I could put it in the crawl space/storage room/equipment room. This room has a dirt floor, is 6' in height with the proper clearances in front & to the sides for the panel. The gas furnace is also located in this room. Can I install the panel here??

As Mike has noted in his post #2, your request appears to be within compliance for both the 05 and the 08 NEC.

The clearance requirements for your sub-panel installation can be found in Section 110.26. Headroom requirements can be found in Section 110.26(A)(3), which directs you to Section 110.26(E) where the minimum headroom is noted as 6? feet.

Since you noted this is a dwelling remodel (existing dwelling), I believe you would fall under the exception to Section 110.26(E).

This exception IMO should have a heigth limit. As it is now the service equipment or panel could be in a 3ft crawl space on existing dwelling units.
