Just a quick question regarding the overall setup for an ATS,

If you have a main service panel and want to choose the loads that a generator will serve (to size the generator and ATS), my thinking tells me you would move those selected loads to a sub-panel. Then the feeder for the sub-panel would run through the ATS and then onto the sub-panel.

When grid power is out the ATS senses it and kicks on the generator and switches for that sub-panel to be fed by the generator?

What are the pros and cons of generac's integrated ATS/Sub-panel setup vs using separate components?

Thanks!

With the generac you are stuck with their hardware so you have to fit everything around it. If you buy your own sub panel you can customize your layout.
Yes. Also can create more difficulty if you need special features/accessories such as AFCI/GFCI/Dual function breakers, padlock attachments, shunt trip breakers, switched neutral breakers, etc.
