when running a 100 amps to another location outside of the home service panel to a building not attached to a sub panel should you run 3 wires or 4 ive heard several different stories on this ....

Under the current NEC there is almost no situation where a homes 120/240 volt subpanel can be supplied by a three wire feeder.

There are some allowances for existing, separate buildings or structures.
